사람들이 어떤 때에 거짓말을 하게 되는지 이야기해 주세요.

Sometimes in life, people stray from the truth, even if they don't mean to. Rather than lying to hurt others, they tell white lies to get out of a pickle or to spare someone's feelings. For example, people might seek someone's understanding by making up an excuse when they can't keep their word. There are times when people lie out of consideration for others, but more often they lie to save face. These lies are common in both work-related settings and personal relations. At times, lying can help to solve problems. But in the end, people lie to cover up lies, and fall into a vicious cycle. When someone finds out about the lie, it can make matters worse. That's why people usually learn that honesty is the best policy in any situation.

살다 보면 본의 아니게 거짓말을 하게 되는 경우가 있다. 남을 해치기 위해서 거짓말을 하기보다는 곤란한 상황을 모면하거나 상대의 기분을 상하지 않게 하기 위해 선의의 거짓말을 한다. 예를 들어서, 약속을 지키지 못할 때 구실이나 핑계를 만들어서 양해를 구하기도 한다. 상대방을 배려하기 위해 거짓말을 하는 경우도 많지만, 대부분 본인의 체면을 지키기 위해 거짓말을 한다. 이러한 거짓말을 업무 관련해서도 하게 되고 사적인 인간 관계에서도 하게 된다. 물론 거짓말이 문제 해결에 도움이 되는 경우도 있다. 그러나 궁극적으로는 거짓말을 덮기 위해 또 거짓말을 하게 되는 악순환에 빠진다. 그리고 상대가 거짓말이라는 것을 발견하게 되면, 문제가 오히려 더 악화되는 경우가 있다. 그래서 어떤 상황에서든 사실 그대로 솔직한 것이 가장 좋은 방법이라고 깨닫게 되는 경우가 많다.

우리 말 '체면'의 '면(面)'은 '얼굴'을 뜻하는데, 재미있게도 영어에서도 face를 사용한다. 체면을 지키는 것을 save face, 체면을 구기거나 망신을 당하는 것을 lose face라고 말한다.
예) My parents think it is very important to save face. (부모님께서는 체면을 지키는 것을 매우 중요하게 생각하신다.)

For example, people might seek someone's understanding by making up an excuse when they can't keep their word. There are times when people lie out of consideration for others, but more often they lie to save face. These lies are common in both work-related settings and personal relations. At times, lying can help to solve problems. But in the end, people lie to cover up lies, and fall into a vicious cycle. When someone finds out about the lie, it can make matters worse.
