<말하기 연습>
This year marks my sixth year as an ethics teacher. Among various teaching methods, I particularly enjoy using "paired debates." A common topic in my ethics classes: "Is human nature inherently good or evil?"
나는 올해로 6년 차 도덕 교사를 하고 있다. 나는 여러 수업 방식 중 "짝 토론"을 특히 좋아하는 편이다. 내 도덕 수업의 단골 주제로 나오는 것이 "인간의 본성은 선할가, 악할까?"이다.

One lesson stands out in my memory. Since the class had an odd number of students, I paired up with one of the students for the debate. Regarding human nature, I said, "I used to believe that humans are inherently good. But after becoming a teacher, I've come to realize that the theory of inherent evil is more accurate."
그중에서 가장 기억에 남는 수업이 있다. 학급 인원이 홀수여서, 내가 한 학생과 짝을 이뤄 토론을 하게 되었다. 인간의 본성에 대하여 나는 "선생님은 과거에 성선설을 믿었단다. 그런데 교직에 온 이후로는 성악설이 더 맞다는 사실을 깨닫게 되었어."라고 답했다.

I said it lightheartedly as a joke, but the student looked a bit taken aback. After that, whenever I scolded kids making trouble in the hallway, the student who debated with me looked at me sympatherically and said, "You must have a tough job." Seeing this reaction made me recognize that there is still a lot of warmth in the world.
나는 가볍게 이야기를 했는데, 아이가 조금 놀란 것 같아 보였다. 그 뒤로 복도에서 장난꾸러기 아이들을 지도할 때마다, 나와 토론을 했던 아이는 측은하게 나를 바라보면서 "고생이 많으시네요."라고 말해 주었다. 아이의 이런 태도를 보고 세상은 아직 많이 따뜻하다는 것을 느꼈다.
