올해 들어 유난히 산불 소식이 많이 들려온다. 최근 하와이에서 발생한 대형 산불로 인해 큰 피해를 입었고, 많은 사람들과 동식물이 희생되었다. 이 같은 자연재해가 지속적으로 발생할 경우, 우리 삶을 지탱해 주는 식물들의 생존이 위협을 받을 것이다.

Meanwhile, there is something called a seed vault. This is a type of plant seed storage facility set up as a safeguard against the disappearance of plant species due to natural disasters, climate change, or war. There are two such vaults in the world: one in Svalbard, Norway, and the other in Bonghwa, right here in Korea. Norway stores seeds of food crops, while Korea stores seeds of wild plants.
한편, 시드 볼트라는 것이 있다. 이는 자연재해, 기후 변화, 전쟁 등으로 식물이 사라질 경우에 대비하여 설치한 일종의 식물 종자 저장소이다. 전 세계에 두 곳의 시드 볼트가 있는데, 하나는 노르웨이 스발바르에, 다른 하나는 바로 우리나라 봉화에 위치하고 있다. 노르웨이는 식량 작물의 종자를, 우리나라는 야생 식물의 종자를 보관하고 있다.
