Neurology.
Doctors can generally be categorized as internists and surgeons. For example, gastroenterology is the department that uses drug treatments for various stomach issues. But if you require surgery, you would consult with a general surgery doctor. You go to the cardiology department to treat heart diseases with medicine, but the cardiovascular surgery department is where you would undergo heart surgery.
A person's nervous system comprises the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system that branches out from it. The neurology department is where afflictions of the nervous system are treated with medicine. If you require surgery, you would go to the neurosurgery department.
Advanccments in the medical field hav led to extensive research on the brain and nervous system. Neurology has shed light on mechanisms and treatment for rare disease that were considered untreatable in the past.
신경과.
의사는 크게 내과 의사와 외과 의사로 나눌 수 있다. 예를 들어, 위장에 여러 문제가 생겼을 때 약물로 치료를 하는 곳은 소화기내과이다. 하지만 수술이 필요한 경우에는 일반 외과 의사와 상담하게 된다. 심장에 생긴 질환을 약으로 치료하려면 심장내과를 가지만, 심장 수술을 받는 곳은 흉부외과이다.
사람의 신경계는 중추 신경계와 거기서 갈려저 나온 말초신경계로 이루어져 있다. 신경과는 신경계의 질환을 약물로 치료하는 곳이다. 수술이 필요하면 대신 신경외과로 가게 된다.
의학이 발달하면서 뇌와 신경계에 대한 연구가 활발해졌다. 신경과는 과거에 불치병으로 여겨졌던 희귀성 질환들에 대한 기전과 치료를 밝혀낸 바 있다.
