Talk about Friday the 13th.

I don't know when it started, but Friday the 13th has been considered a day when unfortunate things happen. People in Korea avoid the number 4 because it symbolizes death. It's just a silly superstition, but it gives us a vaguely uneasy feeling. In the same vein, people in Western culture dislike the number 13. It is especially so if the day of the week is a Friday.

Friday the 13th usually comes around about once or twice a year. Friday the 13th this year is today, in August.

Younger people might be unfamilar with it, but a horror movie called "Friday the 13th" was a big deal in the past. After watching it, I had to sleep with the light on all around the house. I think it's because of that movie that Friday the 13th comes across as sacry to me.

13일의 금요일에 대해 이야기해 주세요.

언제부터인지는 모르지만, 13일의 금요일은 불길한 일이 생기는 날로 인식되어 왔다. 우리나라 사람들은 숫자 4가 죽음을 상징해서 꺼려 한다. 어리석은 미신일 뿐이지만, 왠지 모를 불길한 기분이 들기도 한다. 이와 비슷하게, 서양 문화권의 사람들은 13이라는 숫자를 싫어한다. 요일이 금요일이라면 특히 더 그렇다.

13일의 금요일은 보통 1년에 한 두번 정도 있는데, 올해는 13일의 금요일이 바로 오늘 8월 13일이다.

나이 어린 분들에게는 좀 낯설게 느껴질 수도 있지만, 한때 "13일의 금요일"이라는 공포 영화가 크게 인기 있었다. 그 영화를 보고 나서는 온 집 안의 불을 다 켠 채 잠을 자야 했다. 그 영화 때문에 13일의 금요일이 내게 더 무섭게 느껴지는 것인지도 모르겠다.
