I am currently living on Jeju Island, on a trial basis. It is kind of a thing these days. This is my third year here already, but I’m still on the fence about whether to move here permanently.

When I first settled down in Jeju, I traveled around like my life depended on it. I went around the island 2 or 3 times a week, seeking out hot restaurants and cafes with a scenic view. Now, on the weekends, I don’t even wash up. I just sleep in or watch TV all day. Sometimes I feel like the time has come for me to leave, but I can’t bite the bullet. I used to live in an island area, so I long for the sea. If I do leave Jeju, I’m pretty sure that I’ll want to come back.

During my first year here, I felt let down by the fickle weather and the surprisingly cold winter. But now I am enjoying life as a Jeju local, who can even speak the local dialect.

나는 현재 제주도에 임시로 거주하고 있다. 요즘 이러한 ‘제주살이’가 유행이다. 어느덧 여기 거주한 지 3년째인데, 영구적으로 정착할지는 아직 고민 중이다.

처음 제주에 왔을 때는, 정신줄을 놓은 것처럼 여기저기 돌아다녔다. 일주일에 섬을 2~3바퀴씩 돌며 맛집이나 카페 등 전망이 좋은 곳을 찾아다녔다. 지금은 주말에 씻지도 않고, 그냥 늦게까지 잠을 자거나 하루 종일 TV만 본다. 이제 떠날 때가 된 것인가 싶다가도, 쉽게 결단을 내리지 못하겠다. 나는 내륙에 살았기 때문에 바다에 대한 갈망이 크다. 제주를 떠나면 분명 다시 오고 싶어질 것이 뻔하다.

제주에 거주한 첫해에는 변덕스러운 날씨와 뜻밖의 추운 겨울 때문에 배신감이 들었었다. 그러나 지금은 제주 사투리도 유창하게 구사하는 제주도민으로 재미있게 살아가고 있다.
