Talk about Korea's seaweed production.
Korea, China, Japan are the major producers of dried seaweed. Korea is responsible for 50% of global dried seaweed production. Korea is the top exporter of dried seaweed in the world. The country set a new record last year with 600milion dollars in exports. That's why dried seaweed is called "the black semiconductor", a profitable product for export.
Dried seaweed is only produced in the winters. Seaweed harvested in the winter is dried into sheets, and mostly kept frozen throughout the year. Seaweed can only be farm-raised in oceans along mud flats. It is only harvested on the western and southern coasts of Korea. It's because the plants thrive on the abundant nutrients and salts of the mud flats. The western coast in particular has a wide tidal range and wide mud flats, which are ideal conditions for farming seaweed.
Workers must go out in the small hours of the morning to harvest seaweed or flip the nets. It's back-breaking work, performed ion the bitter cold and biting winds.
한국의 김 생산에 대해 이야기해 주세요.
한국과 중국 그리고 일본은 김의 주요 생산지로, 우리나라는 전 세계 김 생산의 약 50퍼센트를 차지하고 있다. 한국은 전 세계에서 김 수출 1위 국가이다. 작년에 6억 달러의 수출을 달성하며 신기록을 세웠다. 그래서 김은 "검은 반도체"라고 불리는 수출 효자 상품이다.
김은 겨울에만 생산된다. 겨울에 채취한 김을 사각형 형태로 말려, 1년 동안 주로 냉동 보관한다. 김은 갯벌이 있는 바닷가에서만 양식이 가능하다. 우리나라는 서해와 남해에서만 김이 채취된다. 갯벌의 풍부한 영양분과 염류를 먹고 자라기 때문이다. 특히 서해는 조석 간만의 차가 크고 갯벌이 넓기 때문에 김을 양식하는데 최적의 조건이다.
어민들은 새벽 일찍 나가 김을 채취하거나 김발을 뒤집는 작업을 해야 하는데, 이는 칼바람을 맞으며 혹독한 추위를 견뎌야 하는 고된 작업이다.
