Abusive comments are written online with ill intent. Personal attacks on certain people are the most common form of abusive comments. Some abusive comments spread baseless claims to defame someone. Usually, these abusive comments are directed at public figures, or people who are well-known through the media. The comments can leave a scar for the victims. Often, their social standing can be damaged beyond repair.

악성 댓글은 인터넷에 악의적인 목적을 가지고 쓰는 글을 지칭한다. 특정인에게 인신공격을 하는 것이 악성 댓글의 가장 일반적인 형태다. 전혀 근거가 없는 사실을 유포해서 특정인의 명예를 실추시키는 악성 댓글도 있다. 주로 이러한 악성 댓글들은 공인이나 대중 매체를 통해 알려진 이들을 대상으로 한다. 피해자들에게 마음의 상처를 줄 수 있고, 사회적 지위에 돌이킬 수 없는 손상을 주는 경우가 많다.

Abusive comments are a major social issue. It's usually possible to write things anonymously online. That's why some people write terrible things willy-nilly. Famous celebrities or public figures often sustain damage due to these comments. They can be emotionally wounded. In some cases, victims even end their own life. I think there should be stronger legal measures to severely punish people who make it a habit to write such comments. Also, maybe people should only write online under their own name. Such a measure should at least be on the table.

악성 댓글은 큰 사회적 문제다. 인터넷 공간에서는 보통 익명으로 글을 쓸 수 있다. 그래서 매우 악의적인 글들을 무분별하게 쓰는 사람들이 있다. 대중들에게 잘 알려진 연예인이나 공인들은 이러한 악성 댓글 때문에 피해를 입는 경우가 많다. 이러한 댓글들로 인해서 마음의 상처를 받고, 심지어는 스스로 목숨을 끊는 희생자들도 있다. 그런 악성 댓글을 지속적으로 작성하는 사람들을 강력하게 처벌할 수 있는 법적 장치들이 강화되어야 한다고 생각한다. 더불어, 인터넷상에서는 실명으로만 글을 작성할 수 있게 하는 제도를 적어도 고려는 해 봐야 할 것이다.
