<말하기 연습>
In the area where I live, there didn't used to be many apartment buildings like in the big cities. But as urban development began over the past few years, apartments have been springing up everywhere. For the past two or three years, l've watched excavators carve away at the mountains to make room for the new buildings.
내가 살고 있는 지역에는 아파트가 대도시처럼 많지 않았었다. 하지만 최근 몇 년 동안 도시 개발이 시작되면서 빼곡하게 아파트가 생겨나고 있다. 나는 2~3년 전부터 새 아파트를 지을 자리를 만들기 위해 굴착기가 산을 깎아 내는 모습을 지켜보았다.

Where do all the animals and plants go as the earth is dug out and the trees are cut down? They lose their homes and are forced to find new places to live. Maybe they move to another mountain. Or maybe they have to come down into the towns where people live, just to find food.
흙을 파 내고, 나무를 베어 내면, 그 동식물들은 다 어디로 갈까? 그들은 자신들의 집을 잃고, 새로운 서식지를 찾아 떠나야 하는 운명을 맞이하게 된다. 아마도 다른 산으로 이사를 가거나, 먹이를 구하기 위해서라도 사람들이 살고 있는 마을로 내려와야 할 것이다.

We act as if we own the Earth, destroying habitats without asking permission. But we're not the owners of this planet. We need to think about how to coexist with other living things. We should ask ourselves whether the development we've chosen is sustainable, and what we've lost along the way.
우리는 마치 지구의 주인인 것처럼 행동하며 허락도 없이 서식지를 파괴한다. 하지만 우리는 지구의 주인이 아니다. 동식물들과 함께 살아가는 방법을 고민해야 한다. 우리가 선택한 발전이 과연 지속 가능한 것인지, 그 과정에서 잃어버린 것들은 무엇인지 되돌아봐야 한다.
