Calming Signals of Dogs.

I happened by chance to become the guardian of a companion dog. It was rough going at first, because I couldn't understand the dog's actions or thoughts. It ate at me that I didn't know why he bit, or hid, or what he wanted.

Then, after reading a book on companion dogs, I learned about "calming signals," which are a form of communication used by dogs. After that, I started looking more closely at my dog's actions. You can recognize the signals if you see your dog with an affectionate gaze, but you can't make them out if you don't pay attention.

Seeing how my dog followed me around all day helped me come to understand how my adolescent son felt. Children going through adolescence may not talk, but they are sending out signals. I am learning to be a better mom, lovingly and patiently waiting.

반려견의 카밍 시그널.

저는 어쩌다 반려견의 부모가 되었습니다. 처음에는 강아지의 행동과 생각을 이해하지 못해 힘들었어요. 강아지가 왜 무는지, 왜 숨는지, 무엇을 원하는지 알 수가 없어서 계속 가슴앓이를 했어요.

그러던 중 반려견과 관련된 책을 읽고 나서, 반려견들이 쓰는 소통 방식인 "카밍 시그널"이라는 것을 알게 되었어요. 그러고는 반려견의 행동을 더 유심히 지켜보게 되었어요. 애정을 품고 보면 반려견의 시그널을 알아차릴 수 있지만, 주의를 기울이지 않으면 알아 볼 수 없어요.

하루 종일 저를 졸졸 따라다니는 반려견을 보며 사춘기 아들의 마음을 더 잘 이해할 수 있게 되었어요. 사춘기를 겪는 아이들도 말은 안 하지만 자기만의 시그널을 보내고 있다는 것을요. 저는 애정과 인내심을 갖고 기다려 주며 좋은 엄마의 자세도 배워 가는 중이랍니다.

B: 듣고 보니 그런 것 같기도 해요.
A: 그러한 반려견의 행동들을 "카밍 시그널"이라고 하죠.
B: 스트레스를 받을 때 하품을 하는 것이 하나의 예죠?
